About the museum
The Museu de São Roque opened to the public on 11 January 1905, under the name Museu do Thesouro da Capela de São João Baptista. It was created around an important collection of Italian art and is one of the first art museums in Portugal. It occupies the central area of the former Casa Professa of the Society of Jesus, next to the Church of São Roque, inaugurated in 1573.
After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768, the church and the Casa Professa were donated to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, which preserves them to this day. The museum is one of the cultural institutions of the Santa Casa and brings together an important collection of Portuguese sacred art.
The route is divided into five units: the Ermida de São Roque (Hermitage of São Roque), the Companhia de Jesus (Society of Jesus), Asian Art, the Capela de São João Baptista and the history of the Misericórdia de Lisboa, founded in 1498. The holdings cover goldsmith work, painting, sculpture, textiles and reliquaries. The collection of the Capela de São João Baptista is classified as a National Treasure.
