About the museum
The Museu Municipal Carlos Reis (Carlos Reis Municipal Museum) was founded on the initiative of Gustavo Pinto Lopes and opened in 1937 as the Biblioteca-Museu Municipal de Torres Novas (Torres Novas Municipal Library-Museum). In 1942 it was named after the painter Carlos Reis, a native of Torres Novas, whose estate is one of the central pieces of the collection. The estate of his son, João Reis, is on deposit at the Museu Municipal Santos Rocha, in Figueira da Foz.
The museum is on Rua do Salvador, in an 18th-century manor house known as the Casa Mogo de Melo, a property of municipal interest. The collections include archaeology, from prehistory to the medieval period, with pieces from the Roman villa of Cardílio and a Bronze Age dagger considered one of the best in the country; sacred art; traditional costume; and a collection of paintings by Carlos Reis, João Reis, Maria Nery, Artur Bual, José Malhoa and other Portuguese painters.
The museum has four units that can be visited separately: the Núcleo de Arqueologia da Cerca da Vila (Archaeology Unit of the Cerca da Vila), next to the Fernandine wall; Villa Cardílio, Roman ruins about 3 km from the historic centre; the Centro Humberto Delgado, in the house where General Humberto Delgado was born, in the parish of Brogueira; and the Central do Caldeirão, dedicated to the Caldeirão hydroelectric plant and to the mills and presses that preceded it.
