About the museum
Alfredo Roque Gameiro, one of the great Portuguese watercolourists of the 20th century, was born in Minde, into a family of farmers. A first museum dedicated to the painter operated between 1970 and 1980, but it closed because it had little connection with the community and the building had deteriorated. In 1986 the Centro de Artes e Ofícios Roque Gameiro (CAORG, Roque Gameiro Centre for Arts and Crafts) was created, a non-profit association of public utility, which promoted the restoration of the building.
The Museu de Aguarela Roque Gameiro (Roque Gameiro Watercolour Museum) opened to the public in July 2009 in the Casa dos Açores (Azores House), a notable example of early 20th-century architecture and garden, linked to the painter's family, which he probably designed in collaboration with his friend Raul Lino. The Município de Alcanena bought the property in 2001. The museum was accredited by Herity International in 2013 and has been part of the Portuguese Museum Network since 2019.
The collection brings together more than one hundred and fifty watercolours and drawings by Alfredo Roque Gameiro and his immediate family, owned by the CAORG, some portraits of the painter made by friends and contemporaries, works on deposit from the family, and all the illustrations for “As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor” (The Rector's Pupils) from the Centro de Arte Moderna of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. For reasons of conservation, the pieces on display rotate every four months, according to themes or periods of production.
