About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Penafiel (Penafiel Municipal Museum) was created on 17 April 1948 on the initiative of Abílio Miranda, its first director, and began operating in the palacete of the Barão do Calvário, next to the library. After decades in temporary premises, it joined the Portuguese Museum Network in 2003 and, in March 2009, moved to its current headquarters on Rua do Paço, with a new permanent exhibition.
The building results from the restoration of the 18th-century palacete of the Pereira do Lago family and of the adjoining building, where the Colégio de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Mount Carmel College) operated between 1881 and 1968. The project is by the architect Fernando Távora, completed by his son, José Bernardo Távora, and includes an underground car park and an auditorium.
The long-term exhibition has five themed rooms: Identidade (Identity), Território (Territory), Arqueologia (Archaeology), Ofícios (Crafts) and Terra e Água (Land and Water), with interactive multimedia displays. The museum also has four units: the Castro de Monte Mozinho (Monte Mozinho hillfort), the Moinho da Ponte de Novelas (Ponte de Novelas mill), the Engenho de Sebolido and the Aldeia de Quintandona (Quintandona village). The headquarters has been closed since 1 July 2026 for the renewal of the long-term exhibition.
