About the museum
The museum has its origin in a fire in 1938, which destroyed the cinema installed in the former Chapter House of the Convento de São Gonçalo. The occasion led to a proposal to create a library and a museum there. In 1946 the Grupo de Amigos da Biblioteca-Museu was formed and, in 1947, the institution was formalised as the Biblioteca-Museu Municipal de Amarante.
The initial collection was varied: the municipal archive and library, the estate of the painter António Carneiro, popular iconography, sacred art, furniture and local archaeology. In 1953 rooms dedicated to António Carneiro, António Cândido and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso were opened. The library and the museum separated in 1980, and in the following decade the museum moved into the convent, in an adaptation project by the architect Alcino Soutinho.
The collection brings together works by artists born in Amarante, among them Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, a central figure of Portuguese modernism, António Carneiro and Acácio Lino. Every two years the museum and the council award the Prémio Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. The museum was closed between February and August 2025 for renovation and air-conditioning works and reopened on 5 December 2025.
