About the museum
The Núcleo de Arte Contemporânea (Contemporary Art Unit) opened on 9 May 2004 and resulted from the donation of an important part of the personal collection of the historian and art critic José-Augusto França to the municipality of his native Tomar. The collection reflects decades of the donor's work and the relationships he built with artists over more than sixty years. The museum belongs to the Câmara Municipal de Tomar, which runs it, and its mission is to study, conserve, promote and share the collection of Portuguese contemporary art.
The building was adapted by the architect Jorge Mascarenhas and has about 500 m² of exhibition area. Two large outdoor works were made for the museum and donated by the artists themselves: the sculpture “Árvore Azul” (Blue Tree) by José de Guimarães, and the azulejo panel “Modulação Luminosa X” (Luminous Modulation X) by Eduardo Nery.
The collection has more than 200 works of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography, from 1932 to the present day, by more than fifty artists. It includes modernism (Mário Eloy, Almada Negreiros), surrealism (António Pedro, Vespeira, Fernando Lemos), geometric abstraction (Fernando Lanhas), the new figuration of the 1960s and 1970s (Grupo KWY, Ângelo de Sousa, Noronha da Costa, João Cutileiro), and artists from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, such as Jorge Martins, José de Guimarães and Ana Vidigal. The permanent exhibition occupies the renovated building, and temporary exhibitions are held in a separate building.
