About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Carregal do Sal is a young institution, run solely by the municipality, which began operating on 17 July 2006 with the mission of preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality. Its earliest origins lie in the Círculo de Cultura de Carregal do Sal, inspired in the early 1960s by Luís de Almeida Melo, who dreamed of a gallery of modern art and wrote to many painters asking for works.
The painter Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, then in Paris, replied with two prints, and several artists of the KWY group, made up of young Portuguese emigrants, followed her example. Among the artists who sent works were João Hogan, René Bertholo, Artur Bual, Lourdes de Castro and Carlos Botelho. Luís de Melo died in 1962, at the age of 41, and the collections were eventually handed over to the Câmara Municipal on 31 March 1978, for the future museum of the municipality; the painting room bears his name.
Today the museum has collections of ethnography, painting, archaeology, sculpture and arms, displayed in rooms dedicated to each area. It also offers visits to the archaeological sites of the municipality and a school museum unit. Guided visits to the museum and to the municipality's heritage are by prior booking.
