About the museum
The Museu do Azeite stands on a small rise above the millennium-old Roman ruins of Bobadela, in Oliveira do Hospital, with the Serra da Estrela in front. It arose from the wish of António Dias, a native of Bobadela with more than 30 years' experience of the world of olives and olive oil, and of his family, who dreamed of a museum built from scratch. The architect Vasco Teixeira designed a building in the shape of an olive branch, through which visitors walk past giant olives and olive leaves.
Through the recreation of historical settings, the collection highlights the machines and processes developed over time to extract olive oil, a precious oil used in food, lighting, medicine and hygiene, and of which Portugal is today the world's fourth largest producer. The museum aims to combine historical and heritage appreciation with tourist enjoyment and to publicise the technologies of olive oil production.
Besides the visit, the museum offers guided tours with the education service, workshops, olive oil tastings by booking, and an events room for meetings and conferences.
