About the museum
The Museu Municipal Prof. Raúl de Almeida occupies a noble building dating back to the 16th century, built on the orders of D. João Luís de Meneses. It served as the town hall until the 19th century and was then converted into a Cadeia Comarcã (district prison), a function it kept until 1972.
It stands on the Praça do Pelourinho, in the centre of Mafra, whose focal point is an eighteenth-century pillory (pelourinho), classified as a Property of Public Interest and an example of Baroque civil architecture. The museum is dedicated to the themes of anthropology and ethnography of the municipality.
The museum space is currently undergoing refurbishment, with no planned reopening date, and is temporarily closed to the public.
