About the museum

The Museu Nacional da Imprensa / Jornais e Artes Gráficas belongs to the AMI – Associação Museu da Imprensa, a private non-profit cultural body recognised as an institution of public utility and established by public deed in 1989. The museum opened in 1997 and installed its permanent exhibition in the Sala Rodrigo Álvares, named after the printer from Vila Real who, in 1497, printed two books in Porto with movable type at the request of Bishop Diogo de Sousa.

The collection recovered by the museum is divided into four main sectors: type founding, typesetting, printing and bookbinding, as well as some collections of prints. Among the pieces are a French Foucher type-casting machine from the early 20th century, and a collection of about 160 miniatures of printing machinery made by the typographer Américo da Silveira.

The museum also organises the PortoCartoon – World Festival, whose prize-winners are displayed in the Galeria Internacional do Cartoon (International Cartoon Gallery), and has developed units outside Porto, such as those in Celorico de Basto, Madeira and Lousada. According to the museum itself, it is closed to the public indefinitely.
