About the museum
The Sé de Lisboa, or Basílica de Santa Maria Maior, is the seat of the Patriarchate of Lisbon. Construction began in 1147, after D. Afonso Henriques had taken the city from the Moors, and was completed in the first decades of the 13th century. It follows the Romanesque model of three naves with a triforium, a projecting transept and an apse with three chapels, similar to the Sé de Coimbra and of Norman inspiration. The first architect is thought to have been master Roberto.
Between the 13th and 14th centuries the Gothic cloister was built, one of the main works of the reign of D. Dinis. D. Afonso IV had the apse rebuilt with a Gothic ambulatory to serve as the family pantheon. The present high altar is Baroque and was designed after the earthquake of 1755; the current stained-glass windows of the Apostles were made in the 1930s of the 20th century, based on fragments of the old ones.
The tourist visit covers the naves and the ambulatory, the Coro Alto, built in 1952 and overlooking the nave and the rose window, the balcony between the bell towers and the Museu do Tesouro. The museum displays reliquaries, among them those of São Vicente, patron saint of the diocese, liturgical vestments for the liturgical year and, in the Sala do Capítulo, ceremonial objects such as the Patriarch's sedia gestatória. The cathedral has been listed as a National Monument since 1910.
