About the museum
MUDE – Museu do Design is a cultural facility of Lisbon City Council, located on Rua Augusta in the Baixa, in the former headquarters building of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino. Its design and fashion collection, one of the most important internationally, was acquired by the council in 2002 and includes around 1,000 pieces of furniture and everyday design and about 1,200 haute couture pieces linked to key moments in 20th-century art.
The building reopened to the public on 25 July 2024 with the exhibition “O Edifício em Exposição”, which presents the architecture and transformations of the property. Besides its exhibitions, the museum maintains a documentation centre with a library and archive, an online collection and an education service.
The long-term exhibition, “Para que servem as coisas? Peças do Acervo MUDE 1900-2020”, occupies the 3rd floor. It revisits the history of design in chronological order and shows Portuguese design in its context.
