About the museum
The original seat in Strážky was built by the Berzeviczy family; in the 16th and 17th centuries the Horváth-Stansith family extended it into a Renaissance manor house with defensive elements. At the end of the 16th century a Protestant school for the nobility was established here, which ceased to exist after a fire and the Counter-Reformation at the beginning of the 18th century. In the following centuries the manor house underwent Baroque and Romantic alterations, fires and reconstructions and belonged to several families. Its last owner was Baroness Margita Czóbelová.
After the Second World War the manor house fell into decay and lost part of its interior furnishings. Together with the surrounding park it was declared a cultural monument in 1963. Between 1960 and 1990 archaeological and restoration research took place here, and in 1991 it was opened to the public.
Today the manor house is managed by the Slovak National Gallery. Visitors find exhibitions devoted to the painter Ladislav Mednyánszky and his relationship with Strážky, to portraits from Spiš from the 17th to 19th centuries, and to Slovak sculpture of the 20th century, as well as the Historická knižnica Strážky with approximately 8,500 volumes. The grounds include an English park.
