About the museum
The Múzeum bytovej kultúry (Museum of Domestic Culture) is housed in a single-storey burgher house with a Gothic-Renaissance core on the Hlavné námestie in Kežmarok. In the 17th century it belonged to the family of the goldsmith Daniel Haltz, as indicated by the ceiling beam bearing the date 1698. In the 19th century it was home to Štefan Palcsó, and the house was rebuilt several times in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum acquired the house in 1974. After a reconstruction in 1978 to 1985, it opened the permanent exhibition in 1994.
The exhibition traces the development of burgher furniture and housing from the 17th to the 20th century. In the ground-floor rooms there is Classicist furniture of the Kežmarok Badányi family, and kitchen and dining equipment from the 19th century with pewter, copper, brass and porcelain tableware. On the upper floor there are cupboard and seating furniture from the Baroque to the Neo-Rococo, clocks from the 18th and 19th centuries, household textiles, personal objects and paintings of Kežmarok families.
