About the museum

The Church of the Holy Trinity stands on a rocky hill in the middle of a high defensive wall on the eastern side of the village of Hrastovlje. The three-nave Romanesque church with a barrel vault and a tall bell tower is decorated with Gothic frescoes from 1490, painted by Janez iz Kastva (John of Kastav). It is surrounded by a 16th-century wall with two defensive towers, built to protect against Turkish raids.

The frescoes show the Creation of the world, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, scenes of Christ’s Passion, the work of farmers in the different seasons, the apostles, the Coronation of Mary and the Three Kings. The best-known scene is the Dance of Death, which shows the inevitability of death for all estates. The interior of the church was discovered and restored in 1951 by Jože Pohlen.

The village of Hrastovlje, with its stone houses, narrow streets and walls, is entered in the register of immovable cultural heritage as a settlement heritage. In the village there is also the Galerija Jožeta Pohlena (Jože Pohlen Gallery), with sculptures and wash drawings.
