About the museum
The ethnological collection is presented in a Venetian-Gothic house on the outskirts of the old town of Koper, on the former St Peter’s Square (trg sv. Petra), today Gramscijev trg. It is part of the Pokrajinski muzej Koper and deals with the material and spiritual culture of the population of Slovenian Istria, Brkini, Čičarija and the Upper Karst from the 17th century onwards.
The ground floor presents the formation of settlements in the stone cultural landscape, architectural details, a reconstruction of a hearth and Mediterranean cuisine. The food preparation and consumption objects come from different cultures, which points to trade with different lands.
On the upper floor is the permanent exhibition Stkana preteklost (Woven Past), which shows the path from fibres of plant and animal origin to the finished product, a garment. The costume of the village population in the hinterland of the towns and the dress of the citizens of Koper, Izola and Piran are presented. In the outer courtyard, stone-masonry materials are on display, and in a shed there is a blacksmith’s and wheelwright’s workshop.
