Muzej novejše zgodovine Slovenije

National museum in the Baroque Cekin Castle beside Tivoli Park, showing Slovenian history of the 20th century.

Opening hoursAdmission €6 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The history of the museum goes back to 1944, when the Scientific Institute, the predecessor of the present institution, was founded; it was abolished in 1948. Since 1951 the museum has had its premises in Cekin Castle on the edge of Tivoli Park in Ljubljana.

The Baroque palace was begun in 1752 by Count Leopold Karl Lamberg, modelled on Viennese palaces. Until the Second World War it was a residential house which changed owners several times; the last were members of the Kozler family, who built the large Ljubljana brewery nearby. After the war the building was nationalised and temporarily used as flats and a school.

The permanent exhibition Slovenci v XX. stoletju (Slovenes in the 20th Century) opened on 21 May 1996. It presents the most turbulent periods of Slovenian history, from the First World War to accession to the European Union, and is complemented by the museum collections and the photo archive.
