About the museum

The Muzej gozdarstva in lesarstva Vrbovec (Vrbovec Museum of Forestry and Woodworking) is housed in Vrbovec Castle in Nazarje and presents the stories of people, wood and forest. The introductory part of the permanent exhibition provides insights into forests, trees and the uses of wood; it presents the forests of the world, different ways of managing them, the special features of Slovene forests, the most interesting trees and the development of forests through the geological eras.

The central part of the exhibition takes visitors back to the life and work of the former forestry and woodworking labourers of the Upper Savinja Valley, among them sawyers, rafters, carters, joiners, wheelwrights and carpenters. The common thread is wood on its way from the growing tree in the forest, through felling and hauling, to processing into finished products. Felling with axes and hand saws, timber chutes for hauling wood from hard-to-reach areas, and the floating of logs to the sawmills are shown.

Visitors can test their knowledge of native tree species, take part in a quiz and play with wooden logic games. Outside the museum one can also visit Bohačev toplar, and in the surroundings the educational trail Samostanski grič (Monastery Hill).
