About the museum

The history of the Žiri museum goes back to the early 1970s. In 1970 a sub-committee of the Muzejsko društvo Škofja Loka (Škofja Loka Museum Society) was founded in Žiri, which on 26 December 1975 became the independent Muzejsko društvo Žiri. The society looks after the tangible and intangible heritage of Žiri, collects objects, keeps them and presents them in exhibitions.

The museum is housed in the Stara šola (Kulturno središče Žiri, Žiri Cultural Centre) at Tabor 2. The building was constructed as a farm manor; it took on its present appearance in the 18th century, and in 1864 the municipality bought it and converted it into a school. In 1999, on the society’s initiative, it was declared a cultural monument. After renovation, several permanent exhibitions are on the first floor.

The permanent exhibitions are Žiri in Žirovci skozi čas (Žiri and Its People through Time), Čevljarstvo na Žirovskem (Shoemaking in the Žiri Area), Žirovski slikarji (Žiri Painters) and the exhibition on the heritage of the Rapallo border, Pozdravljeni, ljubitelji utrdb! (Welcome, Lovers of Fortifications!). The museum keeps collections of objects, photographs, audiovisual material and local-history publications.
