About the museum

Joan Maragall (1860–1911) spent his final years in this bourgeois house on the calle d'Alfons XII, which dates back about a century. Shortly after his death in 1911, his widow, Clara Noble, promoted the creation of an archive to gather and preserve the poet's papers. The Maragall family maintained it until 1993, when an agreement with the Generalitat de Catalunya turned it into a specialised library of the Biblioteca de Catalunya.

The archive is now a documentation centre for researchers working on Maragall, his work and Modernisme in general. The reading room holds manuscripts, first editions, the poet's personal library, a library of critical studies, iconography, a newspaper and periodicals archive, press clippings and musical scores.

The house also functions as a house museum. A permanent exhibition runs through several rooms of the poet's last residence (the entrance hall, the main drawing room, the dining room, the study and two bedrooms), with objects belonging to Maragall and his family and works by artists such as Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Joaquim Sunyer, Joaquim Mir, Josep Clarà, Manolo Hugué and Josep and Joan Llimona. The rooms are also used for lectures, poetry readings, book presentations and concerts in the garden.
