About the museum
The Fundación Rocamora is a private, non-profit cultural organisation set up in 1976 by Antonio Rocamora Pellicer, Marquess of Villamizar, from the bequest of the art collection of his great-uncle Manuel Rocamora Vidal. It is housed in Casa Rocamora, an Isabelline mansion on calle Ballester in the Putxet district, which was Manuel Rocamora’s usual residence from 1935. The house has undergone extensive restoration.
Manuel Rocamora Vidal was born in Barcelona in 1892 and was a painter, writer, patron and one of the city’s great collectors. He is best known as a collector of costume and clothing, but he is better described as a “collector of collections”. He was related to the painters Ramon Casas and Anglada Camarasa and associated with artists and intellectuals of Catalan Modernism.
The foundation holds more than twenty collections, including Alcora ceramics, drawings, paintings, sculpture and furniture from the 18th to the 20th centuries, and a room with works by Ramon Casas on permanent display. There are also distinctive pieces such as the original bronze model of the Columbus monument in Barcelona and Picasso’s mobile for “Els Quatre Gats”, as well as collections of advertising signs, figureheads, playing cards and automata. The library holds some five thousand volumes. The house has around 600 m² of exhibition space and a garden with palm trees and a pond.
