About the museum

The Chapel-Pantheon forms a complex with the Sobrellano Palace. Joan Martorell designed both buildings on commission from Antonio López y López, first Marquis of Comillas. The chapel predates the palace: its design dates from July 1878 and it was consecrated on 28 August 1881, during the visit of King Alfonso XII and Queen María Cristina to the town of Comillas.

It was conceived as a small-scale cathedral, with an ambulatory, and serves both as a family mausoleum and as a church for religious services. In the ambulatory are the family's funerary monuments: the tomb of Claudio López y López and his wife Benita Díaz de Quijano, with the statues “Plegaria” and “Resignación” by José Llimona; that of Claudio López Bru, second Marquis of Comillas, with a recumbent Christ by Agapito Vallmitjana; and that of Antonio López y López and María Luisa Bru Lassus, with a relief by Venancio Vallmitjana designed by Martorell.

Among the interior decoration stand out the altar, produced in the workshops of Francisco de Paula Isaura y Fragas, and the polychrome stained-glass windows by Eudald Ramon Amigó, which contrast with the sturdy side walls. The stalls, prie-dieus and benches were designed by Antonio Gaudí. The building is currently closed temporarily for maintenance work.
