About the museum
The Palacio de Sobrellano forms a complex with the Capilla-Panteón. Joan Martorell designed both buildings on commission from Antonio López y López, first Marquis of Comillas, an indiano (a Spaniard who made his fortune in the Americas) who returned from Cuba in 1853 with a considerable fortune, founded a large shipping company in Barcelona and set up the Banco Hispano Colonial, among other companies. The chapel came before the palace: its design dates from 1878, and it was consecrated in 1881, during the visit of King Alfonso XII and Queen María Cristina to Comillas.
The palace was conceived as the summer residence of the Marquis and of the royal family. Work began in 1882, and the building was inaugurated years after the death of the first Marquis, in 1888 according to the Comillas tourism portal. It is a neo-Gothic work with Modernist features and a plan inspired by Palladio, with an almost rectangular body, more carefully finished on the main façade than on the rear.
Today the visit is always guided and covers the main rooms of the first floor: the billiard room, the dining room, the throne room, the library and the museum of the second Marquis. Notable features include the monumental staircase in the entrance hall, lit from above by a skylight of polychrome stained glass, the fireplaces by Cristóbal Cascante and the throne room, with its coffered ceiling, walls covered in gold leaf and four mural paintings by Llorens i Masdeu on episodes from the history of the marquisate. The stained glass is from the workshop of Eudald Amigó.
