About the museum
MAD Antequera, or Museo de Arte de la Diputación, occupies the Casa Museo de los Colarte, a building from the late 18th century commissioned by Juan Manuel de Colarte y Lila. The house has a Mannerist design with Muslim reminiscences. Its façade faces Calle Diego Ponce and it has a second entrance on Calle Maderuelos. Notable features are the red-stone portal from El Torcal and the staircase, covered by a barrel vault decorated with polychrome plasterwork.
For years the building served as a museum space and as a residence for distinguished visitors of the Diputación Provincial de Málaga. It was later conceived as a place to bring together the artistic collection the Diputación has been acquiring, which had been kept scattered across several buildings in Málaga and other towns in the province. The museum opened under this name in 2015.
Its activity is organized in two areas: the permanent collection, which showcases the Diputación's holdings and the architecture of the house itself, and temporary exhibitions. The building also has an assembly hall, workshops and patios used for cultural activities.
