About the museum
El Torcal de Antequera is a natural area of karst relief between Antequera and Villanueva de la Concepción, more than 1,200 metres above sea level. Its formation took hundreds of millions of years: marine sediments accumulated in horizontal strata and, towards the middle Miocene, the pressure between the Iberian and African plates lifted them up. Afterwards, rain, wind and the dissolution of the limestone shaped the present landscape, with more than a thousand sinkholes and caves.
The Centro de Visitantes Torcal Alto is the gateway to the protected area. Its exhibition area, with interactive panels and audiovisual equipment, explains the karst landscape, geology, fauna, vegetation and the history of the area. The centre also has a multipurpose room, a shop, a restaurant, a guide service and parking.
Three waymarked trails start from the centre. Guided visits are organized for individual visitors at weekends and public holidays, and for groups and schools on request.
