About the museum
The house in Parada do Courel was built by Uxío Novoneyra's great-grandfather during the Third Carlist War (1872–1876). It is a farmhouse of heritage value that reflects rural mountain life, based on livestock farming and subsistence agriculture, and in the area it is known as the Casa do Crego or Casa da Fonte. It is organised around a central courtyard, surrounded by outbuildings (a former cellar, carpentry workshop, forge and hayloft) and an orchard that opens onto the forest.
The poet was born here in 1930 and lived in it for much of his life; from 1973 he lived there with his wife, Elba Rey, and their three children, until he moved to Santiago de Compostela in 1983. The house was always open to friends, neighbours and curious visitors, and painters and poets such as Reimundo and Antón Patiño, Manuel María or María Mariño passed through it; the poet Carlos Oroza and his partner, Carmen Latorre, stayed for long periods.
Restoration work began in 2010. Today it is the seat of the Fundación Uxío Novoneyra, which runs it as a “living museum” and a house of poetry open to culture. The guided visit goes through the bedrooms, the study, the garden and the chestnut trees of the Souto da Rubial, as well as the farmhouse, the poet's personal library (with engravings, manuscripts and calligrams) and the family's art collection.
