About the museum
The ethnographic complex occupies a group of pallozas, traditional oval-plan houses with low walls and thatched roofs, in the historic centre of O Cebreiro, where the Camino Francés enters Galicia. It stands near the Marian and Jacobean sanctuary of Santa María do Cebreiro, whose origins go back to the 10th century.
The complex consists of four pallozas. Three are set up as museums and can be visited: that of Xan López, which functions as a palloza museum, that of Quico and that of Galán; the fourth, Campelo, is used as a store. For centuries these buildings were homes where people and animals lived together, with few openings and a high, very dense roof that bears the weight of the snow and withstands the wind.
The holdings are entirely ethnographic: furniture, tools for textile work, farm and livestock implements and everyday objects that reflect the atmosphere of the mountains of Lugo. At around 300 square metres, the museum is state-owned and is run by the Xunta de Galicia.
