About the museum
La Maderoteca is the house museum of the carpenter and poet Urbano Arza Sánchez, who devoted his life to wood and sought new forms with it, halfway between craft, sculpture and poetry. The space, also known as “Maderoteca Máxica e Poética”, was presented to the public in Folgoso do Courel at a celebration with family, neighbours and friends, which coincided with the author's 91st birthday.
The ground floor preserves old tools and the first carpenter's workbench that Arza made at the age of 17, as well as mementos of the business he ran in the neighbouring building. There is also the room known as the Celestial Vault, with a starry ceiling and poems by the author on the walls. The upper floor brings together more sculptures and personal objects, including a tribute to his wife Lola. The interior combines woods such as walnut, chestnut, cherry, yew and box.
According to some tourist listings, the museum also has rooms for temporary exhibitions, a photographic archive, a workshop and an area of metal sculptures. It is located in the Campo da Feira, in the centre of the municipality, near a cultural park.
