About the museum

The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) was born in 1989, when the consortium formed by the Diputación and Barcelona City Council approved its creation as part of a project to rehabilitate El Raval and its historic buildings. It was installed in the former Casa de la Caridad, a charitable institution authorised by Charles IV in 1802 on a site that had previously been occupied by a church, a monastery, a Jesuit seminary and a barracks. The house ceased operating in 1957, when it moved to the Vall d'Hebron district.

The architects Helio Piñón and Albert Viaplana remodelled the building from 1991, with the collaboration of Eduard Mercader. They added a new glass wing and kept original elements such as the sgraffito, the vaults and the pillars. The work received the FAD and Ciutat de Barcelona architecture awards in 1993.

The centre opened its doors in February 1994 with the aim of rethinking the city and society from the perspective of contemporary culture. Josep Ramoneda directed it until 2011; afterwards Marçal Sintes, Vicenç Villatoro and, since October 2018, Judit Carrera. In 2011 the former theatre of the Casa de la Caridad was incorporated, reformed by Elías Torres and Martínez Lapeña, adding 3,164 square metres.

Today the CCCB programmes temporary exhibitions, debates, cycles, the Arxiu Xcèntric film archive and a mediation space linked to the exhibitions.
