About the museum
Arma Plaza opened in 2010 on the Plaza de Armas of Hondarribia's old town, opposite the castle of Charles V (now a Parador). It was created to promote the city's cultural resources and to revitalise the city as a whole, showing the historical relationship between the walled town and the part that lay outside the walls. It is the starting point for the city's cultural tours and its calling card.
The building has three floors. On the ground floor are the visitor desk, with cultural and tourist information about the city and the region, and an area for exhibiting and selling products and cultural merchandise: pieces by local craftspeople, prints of historical maps, engravings, drawings and watercolours by artists from the city, and books about its history. Service is available in Basque, Spanish, French and English.
The first floor houses the permanent exhibition, which revolves around the concept of the “muralla transparente” (transparent wall) and presents information in Basque, Spanish, French, English, German and Japanese. On the second floor there is an audiovisual room with a video in which residents of Hondarribia tell their history and heritage from historical, ethnographic and artistic perspectives; the same multi-purpose space is used for temporary exhibitions, lectures and meetings. The centre is run by the Arma Plaza Fundazioa foundation.
