About the museum
Ekoetxea Txingudi is an environmental centre in the Plaiaundi Ecological Park in Irun, in the area between the Bidasoa river and the Jaizubia stream. It is part of the Ekoetxea network of environmental centres in the Basque Country, which depends on the Basque Government and is managed by its public company Ihobe.
The Txingudi bay is the finest example of salt marsh in Gipuzkoa and one of the most important sites on the Basque coast for observing migratory birds. The park covers about 24 hectares and has two inner lagoons connected to the tides by sluice gates, an intertidal beach and two freshwater lagoons, as well as viewpoints and observation points. It can be explored on a self-guided route of about 2 km with 17 explanatory panels.
The centre provides information on the park, the bay and the natural areas of the Txingudi special plan. The main room has a model of the bay, information panels and an interactive point with a touch screen; the audiovisual room shows birds of Plaiaundi through two webcams. The permanent exhibition explains how wetlands regulate the climate and how they are affected by human activity. There is also an observatory, a reading area, an educational programme for schools and activities for families and adults.
