About the museum
The interpretation centre opened in 2007 in the former village schools of Guadamur, whose two classrooms were joined together to receive visitors. It is devoted to the Guarrazar treasure, a set of Visigothic votive crowns and crosses of gold and precious stones discovered in 1858 in the municipal area. According to the account of the find, a girl, Escolástica Morales, saw a glint in a hollow uncovered by the rains, and from there came crowns, crosses, chalices and other pieces.
Many pieces were sold to goldsmiths in Toledo, and in 1859 six crosses and eight crowns passed to the French State. The official excavations that followed were harmed by local looting. Today six of the nine crowns, including that of Recesvinto, are in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid, and other pieces are kept in the Palacio Real in Madrid and in the Musée de Cluny in Paris.
The centre displays gilt-brass reproductions of the crowns and crosses, made in a Seville workshop, along with a replica of the funerary slab of Crispinus, spearheads and a slate with Hispano-Visigothic inscriptions. Residents have donated original fragments of friezes, capitals, bases, pottery and everyday tools. The panels explain the last days of the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo and the discovery of the treasure, and a documentary is shown. The visit is guided.
