About the museum

The Centro Memorial de las Víctimas del Terrorismo occupies the former Banco de España building in Vitoria-Gasteiz, designed by the Navarrese architect José Yarnoz Larrosa (1884–1966) in a neo-Renaissance style, with a rectangular plan measuring 33 by 20 metres. Restoration work began in March 2015, and the building reopened in 2021, a century after its first inauguration, with its new purpose.

The inauguration took place on 1 June 2021, attended by the King and Queen, the Spanish Prime Minister and the lehendakari (president of the Basque Government). The museum aims to spread the democratic and ethical values of the victims, build their collective memory, and raise awareness in favour of freedom and human rights and against terrorism. According to the foundation, more than 138,000 people had visited it by its fifth anniversary.

The route is arranged in six rooms: “Aquí, ayer”, as an introduction; the Espacio Memorial, at the centre of the building; the history of terrorism; the discourses and practices of hatred; the response to terror (police, social, international, political and judicial); and the voice of the victims. In addition to the permanent exhibition there is a room for temporary exhibitions, a documentation centre, assembly halls and an educational classroom.
