About the museum
Artium opened its doors on 26 April 2002 as the Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo, in a building designed by the architect José Luis Catón in the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Its collection comes from the contemporary art section of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Álava, where the Diputación Foral de Álava had brought together, since the 1970s, a pioneering group of avant-garde Spanish art, with works by Picasso, Miró and other leading names of the 20th century. In 2002 these holdings moved to the new building.
Today the collection covers Basque and Spanish art from the 1950s to the present. Most of the exhibition space is below ground level, and outside, works by Richard Serra, Jorge Oteiza and Eduardo Chillida can be seen.
Besides the collection, the museum runs temporary exhibitions of Spanish and international artists of different generations and offers activities for families and audiences of all ages. It also has a library, an archive, a shop, a café-bar and a restaurant.
