About the museum
The interpretation centre is next to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz, about 10 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the reception building beside the Benedictine monastery. The sanctuary, dedicated to the patron saint of Álava, is a 12th-century Romanesque church with elements of early Gothic, declared a Property of Cultural Interest in 1931, and the Camino de Santiago passes through it.
The centre is organised into four thematic areas that explain the origins of Romanesque art and its presence in Álava, which has around 240 Romanesque buildings, the largest concentration in the Basque Country. The exhibition uses images, texts, models, facsimiles and audiovisual and interactive programmes, with interactive maps showing the heritage of the province.
The management and opening hours of the centre have changed in recent years: Álava Medieval, the company that used to run it, reports that it no longer takes part in its management and that it has no set opening hours, although the visit to the centre is included in the guided tour of the sanctuary booked with it.
