About the museum
The plan for a museum dedicated to Josep Maria Subirachs was born in 2001, when the artist and the Obra Social of Caixa Penedès agreed to create a centre on Carrer de la Princesa. Economic and administrative difficulties delayed the initiative, which was definitively abandoned in 2012. The sculptor's family then decided to open a museum of its own, which was inaugurated on 27 May 2017.
Espai Subirachs occupies a private space of about 300 m² on Carrer de Batista, in the Poblenou district, close to the house where the artist was born. It is a private museum created by the family and run by the art historian Judit Subirachs Burgaya.
The permanent exhibition, entitled “Subirachs. Retorn al Poblenou”, brings together around a hundred works arranged chronologically that show the different stages of his career: sculptures in various materials, sketches, drawings, paintings, graphic works and lithographs, posters, medals and jewellery. Documents and a video about his career are also shown. Together they reveal his work beyond the Passion facade of the Sagrada Família, with which he is most often associated.
