About the museum

Euskararen Etxea was founded in 2004 on the joint initiative of the Bizkaia Provincial Council, the Bilbao town council and the Basque Government. It is now run by Azkue Fundazioa and presents itself as a point of reference both for those working on the Basque language and for the public. It is on Plaza Agoitz, in the San Ignacio district of Bilbao.

Its public area is the Centro de Interpretación del Euskera (Basque Language Interpretation Centre), an exhibition that aims to convey the vitality and diversity of the language in a playful and sensory way: it offers up-to-date data on its situation, traces its history, presents word games and shows audiovisual material on its transmission and future challenges. The contents are in Basque, Spanish, English and French, and visitors can listen to, read and sing in Basque.

The house also has three multipurpose rooms that organisations dedicated to the Basque language can use free of charge, and a co-working space. In December 2024 it received the Council of Europe Best Museum Award 2025, which recognised its work as a small museum, with only three permanent staff, that carries out many activities together with a network of collaborators.
