About the museum
The Athletic Club Museoa opened on 31 August 2017 in a ceremony presided over by the club’s president at the time, Josu Urrutia, and is located inside the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao. Before it opened, the club had already shown the history of the ground in exhibitions such as “San Mamés 1913–2013”.
The museum tells the story of the club, founded in 1898, with more than a thousand original objects, touch screens and audiovisual content, as well as areas dedicated to the youth academy (cantera) and to Lezama. The visit is completed by a tour of the stadium that passes the pitch, the dressing rooms, the exit tunnel, the dugout, the press room and the presidential box.
In its first full season (2018–2019), 98,771 people visited the museum, making it the third most visited museum in Bizkaia. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the club organises temporary exhibitions in the museum’s multi-purpose room.
