About the museum
The Museo Benedicto de Bilbao brings together the work of the Bilbao-born painter Benedicto Martínez Angulo, whose output spanned some thirty years. The project began around 1990 from a personal promise: to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary with a collection of philosophical paintings. To achieve this he stopped selling his pictures and involved his family; the collection was completed in 1997, as planned.
Each painting is accompanied by a philosophical commentary written by the painter himself, which invites reflection on the message he wanted to convey and not merely contemplation of the work. The museum is run by the Fundación Museo Benedicto, set up under the auspices of the Basque Government, and occupies nine rooms on Calle Iparraguirre.
According to the available descriptions, the collection includes several hundred oil paintings, mostly measuring 62 × 45 cm, as well as drawings, sculptures inspired by the paintings and enamels. Some works are currently offered for sale.
