About the museum
Joan Miró settled in Mallorca in 1956 and lived and worked in Cala Major until 1983. His friend, the architect Josep Lluís Sert, designed for him the studio he had always dreamed of: a spacious, bright space with minimalist lines, where he could work on many canvases at once. In 1959 Miró also bought Son Boter, an 18th-century Mallorcan estate behind his house, which he turned into a second studio and covered with charcoal graffiti on its walls.
On 7 March 1981 Miró and his wife, Pilar Juncosa, donated the studios, with the works, documents and objects they contained, to the city of Palma, and the foundation was born. The collection derives from that donation and brings together nearly 7,000 pieces: paintings, sculptures, drawings, objects and graphic works, spanning from 1908 to 1981. Over time it has been enriched with works by other artists, many of them tributes to Miró.
Today the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca is a public foundation linked to Palma City Council. Besides the Taller Sert and Son Boter, the route includes the building by Rafael Moneo, with exhibition rooms, an auditorium, a shop and a library, and a sculpture garden. The graphic arts workshops that Miró bequeathed remain open to contemporary artists for creating and publishing work.
