About the museum

The palace stands on the spot in the city where there have been settlements since Roman times and where the Muslim alcázar was later built. Remains of that Arab fortress can still be recognised in the layout of the present building. The royal castle was built between 1305 and 1314 on the orders of James II and was the seat of the court of the kings of Mallorca during the first half of the 14th century.

Over the centuries the building changed its functions: from the time of Philip II it housed the Audiencia (high court), the residence of the viceroy and the captain general, and the administrative centre of the Royal Patrimony on the island. This succession of uses explains why the palace combines artistic styles from very different periods.

Today it belongs to the Patrimonio Nacional and is the official residence of the King during his stays in Mallorca, which is also why it hosts the annual reception for representatives of Balearic society. The visit takes in the Patio de Armas, where a white marble lion from the Muslim period is preserved; the Arab baths, used privately by the governors of the former alcázar; and the Gothic hall or Salón Mayor, built in the time of James II and reformed under Philip II. Together with the cathedral it forms one of the city's most recognisable skylines.
