About the museum
The museum is run by Funpromar, the Fundación Clúster de Conservación de Productos del Mar, a private non-profit foundation created in 2007 within the employers' organisation ANFACO. It is housed at the headquarters of ANFACO-CECOPESCA in Vigo. The Consellería de Cultura recognised it as a visitable collection on 29 January 2008, and since 2010 it has been part of the Consello Galego de Museos.
Its mission is to conserve, research, exhibit and disseminate the heritage of the canning industry. The collection consists mainly of industrial objects of scientific, advertising, artistic, technological, social and labour interest: trademarks, company histories, advertising material and catalogues, packaging design, labels, boxes and can openers. It traces the milestones of food preserved by sterilisation and the technical, scientific and social evolution of the factories, with attention to the organisation of work and to the role of women in the seafood sector.
The historic archive holds the documentation of the Unión de Fabricantes de Conservas de Galicia, of ANFACO and of the company Bernardo Alfageme, S.A. The museum also offers an online collection and a 360º virtual tour.
