About the museum
The Pinacoteca Francisco Fernández del Riego opened on 25 March 2011 and belongs to the City Council of Vigo. It occupies the house of Arias Taboada, a 17th-century Baroque building in the old town, sober in style, with the coat of arms of the Taboada and Figueroa families on its façade. Its founder, Diego Arias Taboada, took part in the defence of Vigo during the Portuguese invasion of 1665. A viewing terrace over the old town and the Vigo estuary was added later.
The gallery was created to display the painting and sculpture of the municipal collections through long-term exhibitions. The selection brings together more than 160 works by over 80 artists, including pieces from the legacy of Policarpo Sanz, paintings deposited by the Museo del Prado in 1935, and Galician, Dutch, Flemish, German and French painting.
The gallery complements the Museo Municipal Quiñones de León, whose Galician art section is shown in this building.
