About the museum
The museum occupies the Pazo de Castrelos, one of Galicia's most outstanding pazos (manor houses), in the park of the same name. Its origins lie in the Pazo de Lavandeira, dating from 1670, which belonged to the Quiñones de León family between 1678 and 1918. The building, remodelled at the end of the 19th century, is an example of Galician stately architecture and is surrounded by gardens of about five hectares designed in 1890 by the Portuguese Jacinto de Matos, declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1955.
The museum opened in 1937 thanks to the donation of the pazo and the gardens to Vigo City Council by Fernando Quiñones de León, and to the generosity of Policarpo Sanz, whose bequest provided much of the painting collection. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1962.
The ground floor preserves the atmosphere of the former residence of the marquises and displays European painting of the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum has 29 permanent exhibition rooms and a library. The archaeology section, in the annexe building, explains the development of Vigo and its region from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages and presents the finds from Monte do Castro. Galician painting is shown in the Pinacoteca Francisco Fernández del Riego.
