About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico de Bizkaia, called Arkeologi Museoa in Basque, is the reference centre for the archaeology of the territory. It is on the Calzada de Mallona, in the old town (Casco Viejo) of Bilbao, and belongs to the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia (Provincial Council of Bizkaia). In 2009 the Archaeology and Prehistory collections that had been displayed in the Museo Vasco were transferred to this new museum.
Its permanent exhibition occupies two floors and traces human presence in Bizkaia from more than 100,000 years ago to historical times. As well as spreading knowledge about the territory's past, the museum takes care of the storage, conservation and restoration of materials from archaeological excavations carried out in Bizkaia, and it serves researchers from Monday to Friday. It also programmes temporary exhibitions and guided tours.
