About the museum

The Museo Taurino de Bilbao was founded on 9 June 1995 and is housed inside the Vista Alegre bullring. It traces the history of bullfighting in Bilbao and Bizkaia and is designed as a teaching unit divided into eight chronological sequences, from the bullfights of the Enlightenment and the Romantic bullfighters to the era of Guerrita, the Silver Age, the era of Manolete, the fifties and the era of El Cordobés.

The texts are accompanied by more than a hundred photographs. Among the pieces on display are prints from Goya’s series Tauromaquia, original bullfight posters and paintings by the Bringas brothers, as well as heads of famous bulls, bullfighting costumes of Antonio Ordóñez, of El Niño de la Capea and of the picador Egaña, a sword belonging to Cocherito and the cape of Costillares. Books and models of Bilbao’s former bullrings are also shown.

Guided visits for groups of at least fifteen people are arranged by prior appointment.
