About the museum

The Museo Arqueológico de La Gomera, also presented as the Museo Insular de La Gomera, opened on 25 April 2007 to bring together the archaeological finds of the island and to serve as a research centre on its prehistory. It is a public institution owned by the Government of the Canary Islands and run by the Cabildo Insular de La Gomera (island council) through its Historic Heritage Service.

It is housed in the Casa Echeverría, a building from the second half of the 18th century built for Miguel de Echeverría y Mayora, a soldier and businessman of Navarrese origin. In the 20th century it served as a home, the island's courthouse and a metalwork workshop, and was popularly known as “la Casa del Cañón” (the House of the Cannon) because of the cannon that served as a buttress on one corner. The Government of the Canary Islands acquired it in 1994 and refurbished it for use as a museum.

The exhibition focuses on the indigenous culture of La Gomera and its prehistory, which continued beyond the conquest of 1489. The museum has four rooms and a central courtyard, where 68 original pieces and five reconstructions are displayed, while the holdings exceed 21,000 pieces. Its aims include presenting permanently what is known about the ancient Gomeros, preserving objects and possible archaeological sites, and researching in collaboration with other institutions.
