About the museum
The Parque del Drago was created around the Drago de Icod de los Vinos, a Dracaena draco specimen declared a National Monument in 1917 and, according to the town council, more than 800 years old. For years its surroundings were altered in ways that endangered its survival; from 1984 a landscape restoration project removed artificial elements, recovered the native vegetation and designed a park integrated into the volcanic landscape.
The park covers three hectares and crosses the Caforiño ravine. The route recreates the island's ecosystems by altitude, from the coastal cardonal-tabaibal scrub to the laurel forest of the highlands, and begins at the dragon tree nursery, an educational space on the slow development of the species. In the upper part there is a viewpoint with views of Teide, the sea and the historic centre.
Two exhibitions can be visited within the park: “Antiguos Oficios de Icod de los Vinos”, on traditional activities such as herding, viticulture, beekeeping and glassmaking, and a cave that recreates the Guanche way of life and their method of mummifying the dead, with the audiovisual “Icod de los Vinos, territorio guanche”. Guided tours are offered for schools and groups.
