About the museum

The museum occupies a 17th-century house in the old town of Santiago, near the cathedral, which operated as a student boarding house between 1886 and 1906. Its original owner, Generosa Carollo, ran the boarding house that Alejandro Pérez Lugín immortalised in his novel “La casa de la Troya”. Afterwards several families lived there, one per floor, until the mid-1960s.

In 1966 a radio programme on the Cadena SER raised the 500,000 pesetas needed to buy and restore the old boarding house within a few hours. The town council bought the house, but the restoration was not carried out until the early 1990s, by which time none of the original decoration remained. The building was emptied to recreate the layout and atmosphere of around 1885, and the museum opened on 27 February 1993 thanks to the patron Benigno Amor Rodríguez. It closed in 2008 and reopened in 2010 with the support of the Asociación de Antiguos Tunos Compostelanos.

The visit covers the reception, the dining room, the “sala de respeto” (formal parlour), the bedrooms, the attic kitchen and the basement, the former stable, which is devoted to the university tunas (student musical groups), with their instruments, ribbons (becas), capes, trophies and photographs. There is period furniture, medical instruments loaned by a Compostelan family, and a historic library with editions of the novel.
