About the museum
The museum is installed in a cloister of the Convent of San Francisco in Santiago de Compostela, a monumental complex whose origins date back to 1214. It was founded in 1993, after decades of collecting pieces by the Franciscans, among them Friar Juan Rodríguez de Legísima, founder of the Sociedad Española de Amigos de Tierra Santa (Spanish Society of Friends of the Holy Land). Galician friars have a long association with the Holy Land, to which they have gone as missionaries since 1862.
All the pieces on display come from the Holy Land and allow visitors to follow the history of the Near East from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The exhibition is organised into sections such as Pasado Remoto (Distant Past), Presente de Tierra Santa (Holy Land Today), with mother-of-pearl and olive-wood craftwork and models such as that of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalén Codiciada (Coveted Jerusalem) and Convivencia Actual (Present-Day Coexistence). It also has a numismatic collection.
According to the tourist information consulted, the museum is listed as temporarily closed, with no reopening date published.
